Types of 3G Phones

Hi Friends,

3G fever is taking over India in a few months from now as private telecom companies are going to start 3G services all over India.

Having a 3G network is ONLY good if we have a 3G phone with a 3G SIM card in it 🙂

I did some research on 3G phones and found some useful information which i wanted to share for the benefit of all.

There are 2 types of 3G phones available today, some give true 3G experience while others can support only low speed 3G access.

What is WCDMA and HSPA?
HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) is a new generation communication protocol that allows data connections up to 21 Mbps per user in good coverage and quality conditions. Today mobile phones, datacards & USB dongles are available with HSPA.

WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is a 3G technology version that allows data connections up to 384 kbps per user (64kbps, 128kbps, 384 kbps) in good coverage and quality conditions.

What are the benefits of HSPA over WCDMA?
HSPA allows you to get the best experience of 3G. Given the same bandwidth for WCDMA and HSPA, HSPA allows higher bit rates compared to WCDMA to be delivered to the end users.
Major advantages include:
Faster downloads and sophisticated applications support
Faster response time between network and device, improving the download times and network performance
Improved network performance also leads to significant savings in the battery life of the device
Far better experience due to quality reception resulting from the higher bit rates

Shutdown & Restart Shortcuts for Windows XP

Hi Friends,

Recently i was working by logging in remotely on a Windows XP computer. I wanted to shutdown the remote xp machine, but as you might be aware Windows XP don't provide the option to shutdown when logged in remotely, so i searched for command line options to shutdown/restart/hibernate remote Windows machine, the same works for local machine also.

This command starts a 30-second countdown for a shutdown or restart, which permits you to abort it (with a shutdown -a command). It you want the command to execute, use the -t  flag, which lets you set the time lapse in seconds. The examples below use a 1-second delay.

To RESTART Windows XP:
SHUTDOWN -r -t 01

To SHUT DOWN Windows XP:
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

Hope this helps.

Removing Control M (^M) Characters From Unix File

Hi Friends,

While working on Unix, we generally transfer files from Windows to different Unix platforms. After the file is copied if we open the text file in our most liked Vi Editor, then we see ^M (Control M) character at the end of each line.

UNIX treats the end of line differently than other operating systems. Sometimes when editing files in both Windows and UNIX environments, a CTRL-M character is visibly displayed at the end of each line as ^M in vi.

Two simple ways of removing Control M (^M) Character files are as follows:

1) Using dos2unix utility

Many Unix flavors ship dos2unix utility.

dos2unix filename [newfilename]

e.g. remove control characters from file xyz.txt

dos2unix xyz.txt xyz.txt #this will replace abc.txt and remove control characters

dos2unix xyz.txt abc.txt #a new file xyz.txt will be created after removing control characters

2) Using Vi Editor

To remove the ^M characters at the end of all lines in vi, use:

The ^v is a CONTROL-V character and ^m is a CONTROL-M. When you type this, it will look like this:

In UNIX, you can escape a control character by preceding it with a CONTROL-V. The :%s is a basic search and replace command in vi. It tells vi to replace the regular expression between the first and second slashes (^M) with the text between the second and third slashes (nothing in this case). The g at the end directs vi to search and replace globally (all occurrences).

Hope this helps..
