Indian Railways: 5 digit train numbers

The  Indian railway will introduce  a five-digit numbering system for all passenger trains from December aiming to make it simpler for rail travellers to be informed about the “category” of their trains by just knowing their numbers.
As of now, trains have varying numbers, including three-digit, four-digit and alpha-numeric variants.

According to the new system digit `1‘ will be prefixed before the existing four-digit numbers for Mail and Express trains .
An official clarifying that the names of the trains will not be changed said that the five-digit train numbering has become necessary, since four-digit system has been exhausted.
The five-digit scheme proposes to cover all passenger trains, including Duronto, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Garib Rath and suburban holiday specials. However, it will not cover freight trains.

“CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) has been instructed to make necessary changes to modify the software.Once the software is ready, the new numbers will be reflected in both passenger reservation system and train enquiry system” the official added.
